2011 Barbera Santa Barbara County

2011 Barbera Santa Barbara County

When we poured a glass of the 2011 Barbera, we noticed scents of rich jam, raspberry, cherry, and pepper. Yes, all that. Such is the case as this vintage is blended with Nebbiolo, which makes the wine lighter and brighter. Unlike previous vintages, this Barbera follows a traditional Barbera d’Asti style—a red wine meant to be enjoyed rather young. We would agree. This release has a smooth body with flavors of raspberry and currant. Such soft, approachable tannins and acidity makes this a perfect pair with grilled chicken bruschetta, or parmesan crusted halibut with tomato basil sauce.

2008 Barbera Santa Barbara County

2008 Barbera Santa Barbara County

Longtime beloved grape variety of northwestern Italy, Barbera was first brought to California by Italian immigrants in the late 19th century and has been winning hearts and palates ever since.  With flavors of black and red raspberry, black cherry and hints of smoke, bacon and cracked pepper, Tre Anelli’s Barbera is robust and intensely satisfying.  Fans of our ‘07 Barbera will note that this year’s offering, which spent 21 months patiently barrel aging, has more depth and rounded tannins, making it an extremely food-friendly wine.  Try it with Italian cuisine, like penne all’arrabbiata or spicy shrimp fra diavolo.  Or brighten up rich, fatty foods like herb roasted duck with Barbera’s higher acidity.  It also pairs well with earthy dishes like chanterelle risotto or grilled Portobello mushroom topped with Gorgonzola cream sauce.

2008 Diavolessa Santa Barbara County

2008 Diavolessa Santa Barbara County

An old saying goes “the devil is in the details” – case in point is Tre Anelli’s painstakingly created red blend called Diavolessa (which means “she-devil” in Italian, just in case you were wondering).  Two of the beloved grapes of Piedmont, Dolcetto and Barbera, make up more than half of this proprietary blend which also includes Petite Sirah and Zinfandel.  Meticulously tasted over many months, carefully blended to bring out the best of each varietal and then bottle aged, this wine was a labor of love.  Diavolessa slides smoothly across your palate with flavors of cranberry, tart cherry, raspberry and hints of cinnamon and cigar box.  Balanced acidity and tannins combined with enticing flavors make Diavolessa incredibly food friendly.  Try some paired with hard cheeses, tomato-based sauces, spicy dishes, barbecued meat.  How about a charcuterie plate and a Margherita pizza?   You can always say “the devil made me do it”!
