Petite Sirah

2006 Petite Sirah Santa Barbara County

2006 Petite Sirah Santa Barbara County

Sometimes we take old friends for granted. We forget to visit with them and share them with our new friends. Such is the case with our beloved 2006 Petite Sirah. To longtime Consilience fans, this wine needs no introduction as it stands tall and proud in our line up. It is definitely one of the biggest wines we make; full throttle, fruit forward and jam packed with flavors of dark berries, coffee, crabapple and smoky caramel all backed by firm structure. While trying to think of some obscure small berry flavor that this reminds us of (blueberry? boysenberry? mulberry? ollalieberry?), we decided this really tastes like good old American Petite Sirah, straight forward and proud. But wait, it gets even better…pair it with Carolina pulled pork sandwiches, Santa Maria style tri-tip or a juicy burger – your mouth will thank you.

2007 Purple Beast Santa Barbara County

2007 Purple Beast Santa Barbara County

There is definitely something special about the color purple – it has been worn by royalty throughout the ages and psychologists tell us that purple can boost imagination and help get those creative juices flowing. While that may sound farfetched, it might explain why purple is the subject of so many hit songs like “Purple Rain”, “Purple Haze” and “Purple People Eater”. Here at Consilience we’re head over heels about purple because of our latest blend called Purple Beast. This monster mélange of Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Zinfandel has enticing aromas of chocolate, blackberry and plum that lead to flavors of cola, coffee and ripe black fruit. Try some paired with smoky and spicy dishes like Moroccan-spiced lamb, grilled hangar steak with bacon chimichurri or smoked balsamic glazed ribs. Purple Beast – just one sip and you’ll be singing à la Prince, “Purple Beast, Purple Beast”.

2006 Petite Sirah La Presa Vineyard

2006 Petite Sirah La Presa Vineyard

Johnny Cash had a hit song called “Boy Named Sue” about an unfortunately named son and how he had to fight for respect because of his girly moniker. Much like Sue, Petite Sirah could really use a better name; after all there is nothing “petite” about it and it is not Syrah. All naming issues aside, there is no doubt about it; our La Presa Petite Sirah is one BIG, full-bodied, inky, chewy red. From the first sip, flavors of dried cranberry, black plum, cracked pepper, cinnamon, allspice, cardamom, star anise and cloves explode across your palate. With a finish of bittersweet chocolate and black cherry, this wine does not go quietly; it has staying power and invites you back for more. Try some paired with beef tenderloin and rosemary, spice rubbed leg of lamb, pork in molé sauce or a dark chocolate soufflé.
